Inspection arrangements
Work-based learning
Estyn carries out inspections of vocational training funded by the Welsh Assembly Government through the National Council for Education and Training in Wales. We carry these out under section 75 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000. There are in the region of 200 providers in Wales. The current five-year inspection cycle began in April 1999 and will end in March 2004.
We inspect provision under six headings; quality of training, learning and assessment; standards attained by trainees; management of training; support for trainees; resources for training; and the management of quality.
In the inspection report, we award grades on a scale of 1-5, based on the balance between the provision's good features and its shortcomings.
The institution being inspected has the option of nominating a member of its staff to join the inspection team. Where a training provider's activity takes place in both England and Wales, we work in partnership with the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) and the report is published on our website and on the ALI website. Because of the arrangements which existed prior to the implementation of the Learning and Skills Act 2000, reports published before 31st March 2001 appear on the National Assembly Website.
